Principles of Accounts rewards students who understand what a transaction does — what is gained, what is given up, and therefore what is debited and credited. Students who instead memorise statement formats and standard entries do well for a term or two, then stall the moment a question presents a transaction they have not seen.
That plateau is the most common pattern in the subject, and it is a study-method problem rather than an ability one.
Why memorisation works, and then doesn’t
Early POA is well-behaved. Transactions are familiar, formats are consistent, and a student who has memorised the layout of a statement and the standard entries will score well.
Then questions start combining transactions, presenting unfamiliar ones, or asking for adjustments that change what should have been recorded. At that point the memorised student has nothing to fall back on, because they never learned the rule the entries were derived from — and it reads to them as the subject suddenly becoming much harder.
The underlying skill is the double-entry logic: every transaction affects at least two accounts, what is received is debited, what is given is credited, and the accounting equation stays in balance. A student who can reason from that can handle a transaction they have never met. A student who cannot is guessing.
Where marks actually go
Sort a marked paper into these piles.
Wrong accounts identified. The student did not work out what the transaction actually does. This is the double-entry logic gap and it is the root cause of most other errors.
Right accounts, wrong side. Debit and credit reversed. Usually the same gap, expressed differently — the student is pattern-matching rather than reasoning.
Adjustments mishandled. Accruals, prepayments, depreciation, bad debts, provisions. These require understanding why an adjustment exists, and they are where memorisation fails most visibly.
Format and presentation errors. Statements laid out incorrectly, headings or dates wrong, totals mislabelled. Real marks, and the easiest pile to fix.
Arithmetic and carry-forward errors. One early error propagating through a whole statement. Costly, and partly recoverable if working is shown.
Interpretation questions not answered. Ratio analysis and commentary that describes the numbers rather than explaining what they mean for the business.
If most losses are in the first three piles, more format practice will not help.
The parts students under-prepare
Adjustments. The single largest source of lost marks beyond the basic logic, because each one requires understanding a principle — that expenses belong to the period they relate to, that assets lose value over time, that some debts will not be collected. Learned as a rule to apply, they are fragile; understood as principles, they are straightforward.
Interpretation and ratios. Calculating a ratio earns fewer marks than saying what it indicates about the business and why that matters. Students routinely do the first and stop.
Control accounts and reconciliations. Conceptually simple, procedurally fiddly, and frequently left late.
What actually helps
Go back to the double-entry rule and rebuild from it. For a student who has been memorising, this feels like starting again and it is the only durable fix. Take unfamiliar transactions and reason through them out loud: what did the business receive, what did it give, which accounts change.
Practise unfamiliar transactions deliberately. The examination will present some. Practising only on familiar ones trains exactly the wrong thing.
Separate format practice from logic practice. They are different problems. Format errors are fixed by a checklist; logic errors are not.
Write interpretation answers and mark them strictly. “The current ratio increased” is a description. What it suggests about liquidity, and what that means for the business, is the answer.
Show working on multi-step statements. It limits the damage when an early figure is wrong.
What reasoning from the rule actually looks like
The difference between the two study modes is easiest to see on a single transaction.
The memorising student meets “the business bought equipment on credit” and searches memory for the entry they were taught. If they have seen it, they produce it. If the transaction is worded unfamiliarly — equipment acquired under a deferred payment arrangement — they have nothing.
The reasoning student asks two questions. What did the business receive? Equipment: an asset has increased, so it is debited. What did it give, or what obligation did it take on? A liability to the supplier has increased, so that is credited. The entry falls out of the reasoning, and the wording of the question is irrelevant.
That second process takes longer for the first fortnight and is faster forever afterwards, because it covers transactions the student has never met. It is also what makes adjustments tractable: an accrual is not a rule to memorise but a consequence of the principle that an expense belongs to the period it relates to, whether or not it has been paid.
The practical test for which mode a student is in: give them a transaction described in unfamiliar wording. A reasoning student slows down and works it out. A memorising student guesses, or stalls entirely.
Where the subject gets harder within the course
POA does not stay at a constant level of demand, and the point where students commonly slip is predictable.
Early work is largely mechanical: recording transactions, preparing basic statements, working within familiar formats. Later work introduces adjustments that change what should have been recorded, transactions spanning periods, and questions that give incomplete information and require the student to work backwards to what must have happened.
That last category is where the reasoning-versus-memorising divide becomes decisive. A question that supplies a partial set of records and asks for a figure that has to be deduced cannot be answered by recalling a format. It requires understanding what the records mean.
Students who coasted through the mechanical phase on memorisation often experience this as the subject changing character. It has not — the assessment has simply reached the point where the underlying skill is actually being tested.
What to ask a prospective tutor
- “Can you tell me whether my problem is double-entry logic, adjustments, or presentation?” A specific answer means diagnosis is happening.
- “Do you teach entries as rules to memorise or derive them from the transaction?” The answer predicts whether the student will cope with anything unfamiliar.
- “Will my interpretation answers be marked strictly?” Otherwise the analysis marks stay unaddressed.
Frequently asked questions
My child did well in POA initially and is now struggling. What happened? Almost certainly a memorisation approach meeting questions that require reasoning. Early POA rewards learned formats; later questions present unfamiliar transactions and adjustments that memorisation cannot cover.
Is POA mostly about maths? No. The arithmetic is straightforward. The difficulty is deciding which accounts a transaction affects and in which direction, which is reasoning rather than calculation.
Why does my child lose marks even when the figures are right? Usually presentation — statement layout, headings, dates, labelling — or interpretation questions answered with description rather than explanation. Both are quickly fixable once identified.
Are adjustments worth focusing on? Yes. They are the largest source of losses after the basic logic, and they respond well to being taught as principles rather than as procedures.
Can POA improve quickly? Presentation and format losses can move within weeks. A double-entry logic gap takes longer because the subject has to be rebuilt from the rule up — but once rebuilt it is stable, since everything else follows from it.
